School attendance is important for the success of your student.  Anytime students miss school, they miss valuable instruction that is almost impossible to make up. Attendance at school is a state mandate under the New Mexico Compulsory School Attendance, NMSA 22-12-1 through 22-12-9.  Please help your child understand the importance of attendance by encouraging him/her to be in school every day.  We certainly understand that there may be days when a family emergency arises or children become ill.  Please contact the office at 769-4430 before 8:15 if this should happen.

An excused absence is one of the following:

• A written doctor’s excuse for illness from a visit to a doctor
• A death in the family
• Unique circumstance as approved by the building principal

We will attempt to make contact with the parent every day a child is absent from school. The following is the process for monitoring our students’ attendance:

• When a child has accumulated three unexcused absences a Three Day Absentee Notification letter will be sent just to let you know you have three days of unexcused absences.  This is just a courtesy letter and no action is required.
• When a child has accumulated five unexcused absences, the school will notify the parent with the Five Day Absentee Notification letter.  A meeting will be arranged with the parent or legal guardian to offer assistance to help your student be successful in school.
• When a child has accumulated seven unexcused absences, school personnel will notify the parent with the Seven Day Absentee Notification letter.  Arrangements will be made to schedule a second meeting with the parents.
• If a student accumulates ten unexcused absences within a school year, the parent will be contacted.
