Test Scores

The New Mexico Standards Based Assessment is a yearly assessment administered to third through sixth graders. The Standards Based Assessment (SBA) has been used since 2004, and was designed to assess whether students meet grade-specific standards developed by New Mexico professionals.

Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) is part of state and federal statute. AYP represents the annual academic targets in reading and math and other indicators that the state, school districts and schools must reach to be considered on track with the federally mandated goal of 100% proficiency by school year 2013-2014.

Targets are set in reading and math and increase yearly as we work towards the goal of 100% proficiency.  All subgroups within a school must meet AYP in reading and math, or the school does not. The subgroups include the following categories:

  • All Students
  • African American
  • Asian/Pacific
  • Caucasian
  • Hispanic
  • Native American
  • Economically Disadvantaged
  • Students with Disabilities who have IEP’s (Individual Education Plan)
  • English Language Learners

Assessments rank students as Beginning Step, Nearing Proficient, Proficient, or Advanced. Students achieving Proficient or Advanced Proficient are considered proficient for AYP and a rate is calculated for the school and district. Proficiency is computed for subgroups only if they have 25 or more students.

Barry Elementary has received outstanding ratings in the past years.  With the change in 2004 to the Standards Based Assessment, Barry has made AYP every year.  Below are comparison scores for Barry, the District, and the State listed by grade level.
