CHS Freshman Academy Course Descriptions

Algebra 1 - MAT125
(full year, 1 credit)
This course includes the study of algebraic and geometric concepts and applications together with methods of reasoning including formulation of questions, analysis of data and determination of probabilities.  Emphasis is placed on application of concepts.
Bilingual ESL 1 (English credit) - ENG143
(full year, 1 credit)
This course is for the Limited English speaking student. This course assists students in developing speaking, reading, and writing skills in English. A variety of materials and strategies will be used to assist student learning. Instruction will be given in English-although Spanish may be used to clarify directions or misunderstandings.
Biology - SCI221 
(full year, 1 credit) 
This course is a study of living things.  It will include the study of cells, heredity, taxonomy, microorganisims, fungi, plants and animals. Laboratory investigation is emphasized.
English 1 - ENG121
(full year, 1 credit)
This class is for the English student who enjoys an intensive study of literature and composition. The emphasis will be on literature, research techniques, writing improvement, and an in-depth study of vocabulary. Projects may be assigned during the course of study as well. 
Gateway to Careers - ACT131
(full year, 1 credit)
This course is designed to introduce students to Career Clusters. The course addresses the steps necessary to acquire employment. Time management, organizational skills, study skills, and note-taking strategies will provide students with effective and necessary skills needed throughout the school year and the rest of their education. Students will complete a State Mandated career portfolio to identify goals and career pathway in the Next Step Plan folder for 10th grade. Students will also complete a State Mandated “GRAD” Plan. Furthermore, this course will analyze and evaluate personal financial planning - budgets, writing checks, balancing a checkbook, stock market and interaction with an on-site student run credit union.
Pre-AP English 1 - ENG151
(full year, 1 credit)
This class is for the English student who enjoys an intensive study of literature and composition. The emphasis will be on literature, research techniques, writing improvement, and an in-depth study of vocabulary. Projects may be assigned during the course of study as well. Outside and summer reading is required for this class.
Pre-AP Geometry - MAT251
(full year, 1 credit)
*Prerequisite:
Teacher recommendation and an 'A' in Algebra 1 or and 'A' or 'B' in Pre-AP Algebra 1.
This course includes the study of plane geometry together with methods of reasoning. Deductive proofs and applications are also included. This course puts an emphasis on problem-solving and critical thinking skills to prepare to serious math student for AP level classes.
U.S. History/Geography - HIS121
(full year, 1 credit)
This course is a continuation of material covered during 8th grade U.S. History. The curriculum is designed to introduce important events, people and places in U.S. History after the Civil War and the reconstruction of our nation. The course will cover 1865-present. This study will include WWI, WWII, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, and the fight on terrorism as well as the introduction of the railroad, inventions, the civil right era and the Watergate scandal.
Advanced Art 1 - ART139
(one semester, 1/2 credit)
This course is designed to provide students an artistic direction in a range of subjects, media, and techniques.  This class is offered to students who have had art or have been recommended by their art instructor.  Students will be introduced to illustration, painting, and advanced drawing techniques, sculpting and the construction of architectural models.
Adventures in Multimedia - TEC130
(one semester, 1/2 credit)
This course is a second semester course, which builds upon the knowledge and skills learned in Introduction to Technology. Students will experience an in-depth exploration of Digital Photography, Image Manipulation Software, Audio Manipulation Software, Create and Edit Video, and learn the process of Vinyl Sign Making.

Agriculture - AGR121
(full year, 1 credit)
This course is an introduction to plant, soil, and animal sciences. Leadership skills, including parliamentary procedure, public speaking, written communications, career orientation and goal setting are also covered.
Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corp Jr. ROTC - ASC121
(full year, 1 credit)
Meets at CHS main campus
The objectives of the program are to educate and train high school cadets in citizenship, promote community service; instill responsibility, character and self-discipline; and provide instruction in air and space fundamentals. This programs curriculum is divided into Aerospace Science (40%), Leadership Education (40%) and Wellness and Fitness (20%).  Enrolled cadets are issued a uniform worn once a week, and Air Force grooming standards apply to all cadets.  Note:  Jr. ROTC does not obligate students in any way towards serving in the military.
Art 1 - ART129
(one semester, 1/2 credit)
Ninth grade art is an advanced class.  Students will use graphic techniques and a variety of advanced methods to develop realistic pencil renderings.  Students will also draw detailed perspective renderings and explore how art touches every aspect of life such as, history, science, biology, math and nature.  We will use watercolors and some computer graphic techniques.  Students will have the opportunity to display their artwork within the school and community.  Fee $5.00
Athletics - PED123 (Boys) - PEF123 (Girls)
(full year, 1 credit)
BOYS-Football, Basketball, and track are offered.  Baseball, golf, tennis, cross-country, soccer and swimming are offered on the CHS main campus, and students can participate while attending the Freshman Campus.
GIRLS-Volleyball, Basketball, track, drill team and cheerleading are offered.  Softball, golf, tennis, cross-country, soccer and swimming are offered on the CHS main campus, and students can participate while attending the Freshman Campus. An off-season program is offered during the school year for students who are interested in trying out for any sport other than football.  This is not a guarantee that the student will make the roster for the sport for which they choose to tryout.  (Football is the only sport for which there are no tryouts).  When each particular season is over, those participating athletes will move to the off-season program for the remainder of the year unless they tryout for another sport.  A completed physical packet and current proof on insurance are required before any tryout and/or participation can occur.
Band - MUS147
(full year, 1 credit)
Freshman band is for students who have two or three years experience in band or two years or less by an interview with the director.  Freshman band rehearses each day during the school day and rehearses before and after school are scheduled.  Students compete in two major festivals and perform for various activities.  Uniforms are issued to each student. High School Marching Band (MUS149) is open to all freshman band members. Students who participate in Marching band will receive 1 semester PE credit.  Freshman band members who do not march will meet during regular class time on campus. 
Band Techniques - MUS137
(full year, 1 credit)
This course is designed for students who need extra help with basic instrumental technique.  This class is designed to move at a slower pace, which will allow a student to increase their technical skills.  Because of the smaller class size, the director can spend more one on one time with each student.  By taking this class, a student can move seamlessly to the next level of band performance.  This class is also available to students who may have a schedule conflict and cannot take band first period.
Basic Foods - FCS119
(one semester, 1/2 credit)
This course will provide students with the opportunity to gain basic cooking skills, food preparation, and meal planning while working with others in a group setting.  Topics will also include: Food Guide Pyramid, nutrients, and safety and sanitation.  Fee $10.00
Beginning Choir - MUS151
(full year, 1 credit)
This choir is for those who have not had much choral experience and need one/two semesters to familiarize themselves the foundational techniques before proceeding in their musical education.
Body Sculpting (Females) - PEF143
Weightlifting (Males) - PED143
(full year, 1 credit)
Students will develop and enhance appropriate physical performance levels using a “free weight regimen”, in addition to supplemental aerobic conditioning resources (i.e. running, etc) and learning the basics of nutrition and healthy eating.
Chorale - MUS131
(full year, 1 credit)
This mixed (male/female) choir will perform in concerts and compete in District and Invitational Festivals.  This course is by audition only. Fee $7.00
Color Guard - MUS145
(Fall semester only, 1/2 credit)
Students will lean the basic fundamentals of spinning flags, basic to advanced dance moves and basic to advanced marching techniques and is OPEN TO NON-BAND MEMBERS.  Students will perform with the marching band at CHS football games, pep rallies, parades and competitions.  Participation in summer band, various clinics, Thursday evening practices are from 5-8 p.m. Non-band students must register for another class in the spring.
Drivers Education - HSE129
(one semester, 1/2 credit)
CHSFA will only offer driver education (defensive driving) to students outside the regular hours of the school day.  Driver Education will be taught at 7:00 a.m. as a zero hour class each term.  An announcement will be made at the beginning of each semester for students who are 15 or will be 15 before the end of the class to sign up.  This class is limited to 30 students and the oldest students will have 1st priority. Due to state requirements absences are strictly limited.
Encore Choir - MUS135
(full year, 1 credit)
By audition only.  This all-female choir will perform in concerts and compete in District and Invitational Festivals.  Uniform Fee $15.00
Fitness for Life, PE - PED 121
(full year, 1 credit)
Overall fitness, as well as, the need to maintain a healthy lifestyle, will be stressed in this course. Grades are determined through participation, written tests, and P.E. skills ability.  A pair of shorts, shirt and gym shoes will be needed for this class.  This course meets the high school physical education credit requirement.
Gifted and Talented - ACT121
(full year, 1 credit)
This course is inter-disciplinary class.  Students will study math, history, science, literature/composition, music, art and technology as they relate to a central theme.  Students will also develop skills in public speaking, debate and research.  A significant amount of time will be spent researching and discussing colleges and career options.  The gifted and talented class builds knowledge, as well as, challenges students with their critical and creative thinking.
Independent Living - FCS130
(one semester, 1/2 credit)
This course will provide students with knowledge that will help them balance their education, career, and personal life more effectively.  Topics will include; personal development, relationships, decision-making skills, health and wellness and financial management.
Introduction to Business - CIS123
(full year, 1 credit)
This course utilizes student-directed instruction with the use of computer applications to solve business problems.  Through a comprehensive exploration of business functions, case studies, and careers, along with an introduction to business technology tools, students analyze business case studies with hands-on problem solving.  Use of Microsoft Office Business Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access) is integrated throughout instruction for application of learned concepts.  Students derive basic knowledge in Marketing, Business Law, Economics, Personal Finance, Accounting, International Business, Management, and Entrepreneurship. LAB FEE $5.00
Introduction to Technology -  TEC119
(one semester, 1/2 credit)
This technology course is in the career clusters and is designed to provide students with basic understanding and working knowledge of the skills necessary to create beginning multimedia projects.  Students will explore various technologies that will prepare them for Adventures in Multimedia course during the second semester.
Journalism - COMM133
(full year, 1 credit)
Students selected for this course will produce the school yearbook and parent newsletters.  This class is for strong English students willing to commit extra time. Applications must be submitted for consideration to be selected for this course.  This course will require time outside of the school. 
Lab Assistant and Office Assistant - BUS113
(full year, 1 credit or one semester 1/2 credit)
Students may be assigned as a teacher’s lab assistant or office assistant Teachers are limited to two lab assistants per year.  A written recommendation must be signed and submitted by the teacher.  Office Assistants must have a written recommendation and approval by the principal. Attendance and work assigned during the period is critical for the student to receive credit.
Library Science - ACT123
(full year, 1 credit or one semester 1/2 credit)
This course is designed to give students a basic knowledge of library procedures and the ability to be a more efficient user. A recommendation is required.  Student assistants’ duties will include each phase of library work:  circulation, reference, and reader guidance services.
Musical  Keyboarding - MUS123
(full year,  1 credit)
This course is for the student wanting to learn  very basic skill and fundamentals for keyboard/piano playing. No prior music experience or music reading skills will be needed.  Music reading fundamental will be addressed, as well as, sight reading exams.
Service Learning - ENG149
(2nd semester only, 1/2 credit)
This course is offered at Cameo Elementary School.  The CHSFA student will play a vital role in increasing a student’s achievement and self-esteem for the elementary students they mentor
Spanish 1 - MLA101
(full year, 1 credit)
*Pre-requisite:  Student must have an A, B, or C average in English class. This is a basic Spanish course.  Language and culture will be studied.  Although no previous Spanish is necessary, it would be very helpful.  Verb usage, reading, writing, and conversation are thoroughly covered.  At the end of the course students will take an exit exam.  If he/she passes this exam, they may advance to Spanish II the following year.
Personal Keyboarding - BUS129
(one semester,  1/2 credit)
This course is designed for students who have no previous keyboarding skills.  Students will learn the proper “touch method” techniques for using alpha/numeric keys on computers.  Tutorial software is used in this course.
Project Citizenship - HIS115
(full year, 1 credit)
This course provides students with knowledge about the Constitution and civic responsibilities, as well as, social and political institutions.  Students will learn these important concepts through brain-based and impact teaching strategies.  All students must participate in a group project identifying a problem related to a local, state, or community government.
Theater - THE129
(one semester, 1/2 credit)
This course will introduce students to the basic skills of acting, improvisation, pantomime, monologues, voice and movement.  Students may perform a play production.  This class also requires a great deal of memorization and bookwork.  It is a demanding class for those willing to give it their all for theater productions.
