Weapons Policy
It is the intent of the Clovis School Board of Education to provide a safe school environment for all of its students and staff members. To ensure that these students have a weapon-free school environment, students are not permitted at any time to possess, use, transmit, or conceal any weapon in public education buildings, on school grounds, on school buses, or during school activities off the school grounds.
Dangerous weapons may be defined as, but not limited to, any type of instrument that could cause bodily injury to oneself or another individual. Also included in this definition is any replica of a dangerous weapon, such as a starter pistol or toy pistol. Principals or designees will have the authority to deal with violations on a case-by-case basis, considering such issues as the intent of the student, the severity of the case, and the threatening nature of the problem.
Whenever a building principal or designee discovers a student in possession of a dangerous weapon, he/she shall immediately remove the student from school and notify the parent, the superintendent, and the police of the offense. The student will be placed on indefinite suspension, pending the outcome of the actions taken by the Hearing Committee which will hold an expulsion hearing within ten (10) working days. The Hearing Committee will have complete freedom to decide the penalty to be imposed on the student. Each case will be considered on its own merit.
