Sophomore Checklist

Throughout your Sophomore Year

  • Strive for good grades. Your cumulative grade point average of all your grade: 9-12
  • Note deadlines for applications for scholarship, volunteer, or job pportunities.
  • Become involved with extra-curricular activities through school clubs and organizations, part-time jobs, or volunteer opportunities.
  • Visit with your counselor about the Upward Bound Program (a college preparatory program for first generation college bound students), at Eastern New Mexico University.
During the First Nine Weeks (Aug-Oct)
  • See your counselor to enroll in required remediation courses.
  • See your counselor to check your graduation credits, to review your schedule, and to ensure that you are enrolled in courses geared toward obtaining your future career or college goals
  • Begin a Career Portfolio with these items
    _ Copy of report card
    _ Copies of certificates you earn
    _ A list of awards/honors you receive
    _ A list of school and community clubs
    and organizations to which you belong
    _ A list of all school offices you hold
    _ Copies of class work including résumé’s,
    writings, artwork, and commendations.

During the Second Nine Weeks (Nov-Dec)

  • Take an interest inventory to explore interest and options available after graduation
  • Begin to discuss with your counselor vocational programs or colleges that interest you. Sharing these interests with your counselor allows them to better help
    you attain them.
  • Continue building your career portfolio
During the Third Nine Weeks (Jan-Mar)
  • See your counselor to enroll in required remediation courses you failed first term.
  • Take the New Mexico HS Competency Exam.
  • Plan your junior class schedule with your
    parent/guardian and PASS teacher.
  • Continue building your career portfolio.
  • During registration visit with your counselor about the Technical Career Program.
During the Fourth Nine Weeks (Apr-May)
  • Organize study notes and prepare for finals.
  • Visit local colleges with family or friends.
  • See your counselor to ensure you are enrolled in appropriate pre-requisite classes for college and graduation.
  • Start thinking about a part-time summer job.
  • See your counselor to enroll in required Summer School remediation courses
  • Continue building your career portfolio

Junior Checklist

During the First Nine Weeks (Aug-Oct)

  • Review your credits with your counselor to see that you are taking courses for graduation.
  • Meet with your counselor to see if you have met the Competency Exam requirement.
  • Talk to your counselor about available vocational and work-study programs.
  • Get involved in extra-curricular activities or volunteer work in the community that interest you and may give you career experience
  • Update your Career Portfolio
  • Check with your counselor to begin to prepare for the ACT or SAT with available guidebooks, computer programs, and workshops.
  • Take the PSAT in Oct. the qualifying test for National Merit and National Hispanic Awards.
  • Order your class ring.
  • Look for a part-time job leading to better career opportunities after graduation.

During the Second Nine Weeks (Nov-Dec)

  • Start contacting prospective colleges and ask for an application packet.
  • Obtain a registration form for the ACT or SAT and check on a fee waiver if money is a challenge.
  • Update your career portfolio

During the Third Nine Weeks (Jan-Mar)

  • Take the ASVAB vocational aptitude exam.
  • Review transcript, test scores, credits and graduation requirements with your counselor.
  • Check into technical programs at CCC in allied health, graphic arts, building/construction trades, welding, digital electronics, heating/air conditioning, and business administration.
  • At registration make sure you have signed up for courses that help you achieve your goals.
  • Obtain a registration form for the ACT or SAT and check into a fee waiver if necessary
  • Check with your counselor about taking a computer assisted interest inventory
  • Continue building your career portfolio.
  • Plan your Senior class schedule with your parent/guardian and PASS teacher.
During the Fourth Nine Weeks (Apr-May)
  • Continue contacting colleges for application packets.
  • Start thinking about topics for scholarship apps.
  • Update your resume’ and career portfolio
  • Sign up for summer school courses if needed.
  • Get a head start by taking a course at CCC
  • Meet with your counselor again to ensure you are registered in appropriate pre-requisites for college, work-study, or vocational programs.
  • Start thinking about a part-time summer job.

Senior Checklist

During the First Nine Weeks (Aug-Oct)

  • Visit colleges, vocational schools, military recruiters, and other agencies
  • If you do not plan on attending college or vocational school begin looking seriously for part-time work that will lead to a full-time job after graduation.
  • If you are planning to attend college or vocational school, job shadow in the area you plan to major.
  • Spend time further researching a career area you are interested in.
  • Discuss career opportunities with teachers and community members involved in your interest area.
  • Request application and scholarship forms from the universities or vocational schools you are interested in attending.
  • Review your transcript and test scores with your counselor and make sure you are up to date on credit and graduation requirements.
  • Compile your final list of colleges.
  • Check the daily bulletin throughout your senior year for recruiter information and scholarship opportunities.
  • Register for the ACT or SAT if not complete.
  • Ask teachers and Administrators for letters of recommendation. (Don’t forget to write thank you letters.)
  • Photocopy all applications or apply on-line.
  • Be aware of deadlines for transcripts, recommendations, etc.
  • Fill out diploma order form (guidance office).
  • Order cap and gown and graduation announcements.
  • Register on-line with NCAA Clearinghouse if you desire to play Div I or Div II athletics in college.

During the Second Nine Weeks (Nov-Dec)

  • Request that your ACT and SAT scores be sent to your colleges of choice.
  • Complete and submit all applications if not already done. Financial Aid (FAFSA) is due by March 1st.
During the Third Nine Weeks (Jan-Mar)
  • Prepare the FAFSA form.
  • Remind parents to have their income tax form completed. It is necessary for completion of the FAFSA form and colleges often require a photocopy.
  • Attend Financial Aid night with your parents.
  • Fill out a “Transcript Request” form in the guidance for midyear reports to schools to which you have applied.
  • Register for any Advanced Placement exams.
  • Be sure you received FAFSA acknowledgement.
  • Begin filling out housing applications for your final college choice.
  • Continue reading guidance information in the daily bulletin for local scholarships.
During the Fourth Nine Weeks (Apr-May)
  • Review the acceptances and financial aid offers you received.
  • Revisit one or two of your top college choices.
  • Notify the college of choice of your acceptance of its offer and send in a deposit by May 1st.
  • Take the Advanced Placement exams.
  • Notify the senior counselor of academic awards and scholarship awards for the Clovis High School Senior Awards Night.
  • Fill out final transcript request form to be sent to college of your choice.
