Letter to Households for National School Lunch, Breakfast, & Snack Programs
Dear Parent/Guardian:
The Clovis Municipal Schools offers a choice of healthy meals each school day. Parents MAY PREPAY for their childrens' meals by the week, month or year. Elementary Breakfast $1.00, Lunch $1.75, Secondary Breakfast $1.25, Lunch $2.00. Children who qualify under U.S. Department of Agriculture guidelines may receive meals free or at a reduced price. All meals served must meet nutrition standards established by the USDA. If a child has a disability, as determined by a doctor, and the disability prevents the child from eating the regular school meal, the school will make substitutions prescribed by the doctor. If a substitution is needed, there will be no extra charge for the meal. Please call the Clovis Municipal Schools Child Nutrition Office at (575) 769-4300 for more information. Your child may receive free school meals if you receive Food Stamps or benefits from the Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservation (FDPIR). If your total household income is the same or below the amount on the Income Chart, your child MAY BE eligible for free or reduced priced meals. A foster child may receive free meals regardless of your income (an application is required). The reduced price for breakfast is $.30 and lunch is $.40. WE CANNOT PROCESS/APPROVE INCOMPLETE APPLICATIONS!
- Do I need to fill out an application for each child? No. Use one (1) Free and Reduced Price School Meals Application for all students in your household. We cannot
approve an application that is not complete, so be sure to fill out all required information. Return the completed application to the Child Nutrition Office, 1009 Main
Street, Clovis, NM 88101, or call (575) 769-4300 or to the Child Nutrition Manager at your youngest child(ren) school.
- Who can get free meals? Children in households getting Food Stamps or FDPIR and most foster children can get free meals regardless of your income. Also, your children
can get free price meals if your household income is within the free limits on the Federal Income Guidelines. What if there is a foster child in the household? You must
complete the application including the child’s name, the amount of “personal use” income the child received last month and an adult must sign the application.
- Can homeless, runaway and migrant children get free meals? Please call (575) 769-4300 to see if your child(ren) qualify, if you have not been informed that they will
get free meals.
- Who can get reduced price meals? Your children can get low cost meals if your household income is within the reduced price limits.
- Should I fill out an application if I got a letter this school year saying my children are approved for free or reduce price meals? Please read the letter you got carefully and follow the instructions. Call (575) 769-4300 if you have any questions.
- I get WIC, can my child(ren) get free meals? Children in households participating in WIC may be eligible for free and reduced price meals. Please fill out an application.
- Will the information I give be checked? Yes, we may ask you to send written proof.
- If I don’t qualify now, may I apply later? Yes. You may apply at any time during the school year if your household size goes up, income goes down, or if you start
getting Food Stamps, or FDPIR or other benefits. If you lose your job, your children may be able to get free or reduced price meals.
- What if I disagree with the school’s decision about my application? You should talk to school officials. You also may ask for a hearing by calling or writing to:
Paul Klein, Hearing Official, 1009 Main Street, Clovis, NM 88101 or by calling (575) 769-4300.
- May I apply if someone in my household is not a U.S. citizen? Yes. You or your child(ren) do not have to be a U.S. citizen to qualify for free or reduced price meals.
- Who should I include as members of my household? You must include all people living in your household, related or not (such as grandparents, other relatives or
friends). You must include yourself and all children who live with you.
- What if my income is not always the same? List the amount that you normally get. For example, if you normally get $1000 each month, but you missed some work last
month and only got $900, put down that you get $1000 per month. If you normally get overtime, include it, but not if you get it only, sometimes.
- We are in the military; do we include our housing allowance as income? If your housing is part of the military Housing Privatization Initiative, do not include your
housing allowance as income. All other allowances must be included in your gross income.
We will mail each household a letter of notification informing you if your application has been approved or denied. Households, who qualified for meals in May 2008, need to complete a NEW 2008-2009 application and return it to the SCHOOL CHILD NUTRITION MANAGER by August 29, 2008. If there is more than one child in the household, return ONLY ONE application to the SCHOOL CHILD NUTRITION MANAGER where your youngest child attends school.
Sincerely,
Paul Klein, Supervisor
Child Nutrition
