Dear Families,

There is much to celebrate this 2010 school year.  Our students have demonstrated the “La Casita Pride” through many of their accomplishments!

Our Spanish Spelling Bee winners will compete March 6th at LJFC beginning at 9:00 a.m.  Congratulations to:

1st place-Liliana Araiza
2nd place-Yareli Duran
3rd place-Serena García

Our English Spelling Bee winner is: 1st place-Tony Betts

He has won the district competition and will go to Albuquerque to compete for the state competition!
For the first time La Casita had a poetry competition “Voces Poéticas”. Students 1st-5th grade memorized and dramatized their poem.  10 winners were declared and will travel to Albuquerque in April to participate in the 10th Annual Voces Poéticas.

Hay mucho que celebrar este año escolar de 2010.  Nuestros estudiantes han mostrado el “Orgullo de La Casita” en lo que han logrado.

Primeramente quiero dar felicidades a los estudiantes que participaron en el Concurso español de Deletrar:

We are excited about incorporating phonemic awareness during our 10% English time.  This will help our students understand that we are learning two languages and discovering the similarities and connections from Spanish to English.

You will begin to see how they are learning in two languages!

Your child has homework daily and should be reading 20 minutes every night.  They are excited to show off what they know.

We will be studying the planets in March. 

Estamos muy entusiasmados con la incorporación de la consciencia fonológica durante nuestro tiempo inglés de 10%. Esto ayudará a nuestros estudiantes a comprender que estamos aprendiendo dos idiomas y descubrir las similitudes y las conexiones del español al inglés.

¡Usted se dará cuenta de cómo están aprendiendo en dos idiomas!

Su hijo tiene la tarea diaria y deben leer 20 minutos cada noche. Ellos están listos para mostrar lo que saben.
También en marzo vamos a estudiar acerca de los planetas.

Dear Parents,

During the month of March the first graders will be working on the following areas in Language Arts.  Reading:  They will be discussing author’s purpose, plot, realism and fantasy.   
Phonics:  They will be discussing closed syllables with s, l, m, n, r, and open syllables with y. 
Writing: They will be writing in present tense, past tense, future  tense.
In math the first graders will be   working on measurement, solving addition and subtraction with one or two digit numbers, and probability.  The students will be receiving take home  activities to help develop math concepts. 
In the area of Science and Social Studies the students will be  learning  about tools and machines, animal habitats, and timelines.

Estimados Padres,

Durante el mes de marzo los estudiantes de primer grado estarán  trabajando en los siguientes temas en artes de lenguaje.  Lectura:  Estarán discutiendo el propósito del autor, argumento, realismo, y fantasía.
Fonética:  Discutirán sílabas cerrada con s, l, m, n, r, y abiertas con y. 
Escritura:  Escribirán en tiempo presente, tiempo pasado, y el tiempo futuro. 
En matemáticas los estudiantes de primero estarán trabajando con medidas, resolviendo sumas y restas de uno y dos dígitos y probabilidad.  Los estudiantes recibirán actividades que llevrán  a casa y les ayudarán con conceptos de matemáticas. 
En la área de Ciencias y Estudios Sociales, los estudiantes estarán aprendiendo sobre herramientas  y maquinaria, habitats de los animales, y líneas cronológicas.

Science- This month the students will learn that the properties of substances can change when they are mixed, cooled and heated.

Language Arts- The students will apply knowledge of all sources of information to read new text independently.

Math-The students will  identify and describe situations that require multiplication and division.

Reminder- March is the last month for Book-It.  But the students will need to continue reading.

Ciencias-Este mes los estudiantes van a aprender  que las propiedades de sustancias pueden cambiar cuando se mezclan, enfrian y calientan.

Lectura-Los estudiantes van a aplicar el conocimiento de todas las fuentes de información para leer un texto nuevo en forma independiente.

Matemáticas-Los  estudiantes van a identificar y describir situaciones que requieren multiplicación y division.

Recuerdo-marzo es el último mes para Book-It.  ¡Pero hay que seguir leyendo todo el año!

March: The Standards Based Assessment will take place at the end of this month.  This is the first time third graders will take the assessment.  It is very important that your child is here every day during testing. We also have SPRING BREAK this month! It will be from March 15 until March 19.  Make sure your child gets enough rest during this week.

Math:  We are reviewing Math skills to prepare the students for the Standards Based Assessment.  Make sure your child knows his/her multiplication and division facts by now.

Language Arts: Continue reading with your child every day for at least 20 minutes in either language.  When your child reads, ask higher order thinking questions, such as What if….? Why do you think that….? How would you feel….?, etc.

Marzo: Este mes, los estudiantes tomaran el Examen de Estándares de Nuevo México.  Esta es la primera vez que los estudiantes de tercer grado toman este examen.  Es muy importante que su hijo/a asista a la escuela todos los días, especialmente durante la semana de exámenes.  ¡También tendremos las Vacaciones de Primavera este mes!  Será del 15 al 19 de marzo.  Asegurese que su hijo/a descanse lo suficiente para que este listo/a para los exámenes.

Matemáticas: En estas semanas estaremos repasando conceptos de Matemáticas para preparar a los estudiantes para el examen estatal.  Por favor asegúrense que su hijo/a este estudiando las tablas de multiplicación y las sepa de memoria.

Artes del lenguaje: Por favor continúen leyendo con su hijo (a) todos los días por 20 minutos en inglés o español. Cuando su hijo/a lea es importante que le haga preguntas avanzadas como ¿qué pasaría si….? ¿cómo te sentirías si….? ¿por qué piensas que….? ¿qué conexión puedes hacer con lo que leíste?, etc.

The fourth grade students are working hard in all subject areas.  In Math, the students will be covering the concept of finding the mode, median, mean, and range for a set of data.  We will also be working with fractions. 
In Science, they have just finished learning about the rock cycle and are beginning to explore electricity.  In Social Studies, we are learning about New Mexico.
Remember read 20 minutes every night. 
Standards Based Assessment (SBA) test is coming soon.

Los estudiantes de cuarto grado están trabajando diligente en todo.  En matemáticas, estaremos aprendiendo sobre el concepto de coleccionar y organizar datos, tal como media, mediana, modo, y rango de un conjunto de datos. También trabajaremos con fracciones. 
En Ciencias, terminamos la unidad del ciclo de las rocas y empezamos a explorar la electricidad. 
En Estudios Sociales, estamos aprendiendo sobre Nuevo México.  Favor de recordar que los niños deben leer 20 minutos cada noche.  El examen de los estándares de Nuevo México (SBA) es dentro de un mes.

Working hard! Working hard! Fifth graders are working towards wrapping up the end of the 3rd nine weeks.
In Language the students are reading and writing more in small groups, applying skills learned and communicating about the importance of each skill.
In Math, we are working on multiplication of mixed numbers incorporating written answers through problem solving.
In Science, the students recently covered scientific process and will begin investigating rock cycle next week.
In Social Studies we have been learning about the different battles and the importance of our military. Our next session will be about slavery and changes since.  We would like to ask all parents to remind students to read 20 minutes every day. Our goal is that all students improve in fluency and reading comprehension. The more they read, the better readers they will become.

Hint: Ask questions on what they are reading about. Thanks for all of your support.

¡Trabajando duro! ¡Trabajando fuerte!
Los estudiantes del quinto grado están trabajando duro envolviendo el final de éstas últimas nueve semanas.
En Arte de Lenguaje han estado leyendo y escribiendo más entre grupos pequeños, aplicando destrezas aprendidas y comunicando la importancia de tales destrezas.
En matemáticas hemos estado trabajando en la multiplicación de números mixtos incorporando respuestas escritas atravéz de resolviendo problemas.
Atocante a ciencias, los estudiantes aprendieron sobre el proceso científico, y pronto empezaremos a investigar el ciclo de las rocas.
En estudios sociales estuvimos aprendiendo sobre las batallas de guerras y la importancia de nuestro militar. En seguida vamos a leer sobre la esclavitud y los cambios que han llevado acabo desde entonces. Le pedimos a los padres que le recuerden a los niños que lean 20 minutos todos los días. Nuestra meta es que todos los estudiantes se desarroyen en fluencía y comprensión de lectura. Entre más lean, mejores lectores serán.

Simplemente una idea: Haz preguntas sobre lo que están leyendo. Gracias por todo el apoyo que nos brindan.

It’s hard to believe that half the year has gone by!  We’re working hard to prepare for junior high and for our state test.  In math we are now working on multiplying and dividing decimal numbers.  We are also going to start a daily number literacy along with our shape bait calendar.  Your child can show you these two programs in their math journals.  In science we are working on human and animal adaptations along with learning about weather.  The students are very interested in learning more about our planet and the organisms that live here.  In Language Arts we are busy, busy learning to write narratives.  We are also learning to discern author’s voice.  Come out and visit us!

¡Es dificil creer que la mitad del año ha pasado!  Estamos trabajando mucho en preparación para la secundaria y la prueba del estado.  En matemáticas estamos multiplicando y dividiendo números decimales.  También estamos usando el programa de literatura de matemáticas y el calendario de Shape Bait.  Los estudiantes tienen ejemplos en sus cuadernos de matemáticas.  En ciencias estamos estudiando adaptaciones de animales y humanos y también el ambiente.  Los estudiantes estan muy interesados en aprender sobre nuestra planeta y los organismos que viven agui.  En Arte de Lenguage estamos muy, muy occupados en aprendiendo escribir narativos.  También estamos investigando la voz del autor.  ¡Vengan a visitarnos!
