Federal Law requires each school district to inform all students of the Board Policies relating to abuse of alcohol and/or controlled substances (Drug-Free Schools and Communities Act of 1989 P.L. 101-226).  In accordance with State Board of Education Regulation 81-3, the Clovis Municipal Schools prohibits students from use, possession, sale, distribution, or transportation of alcohol, illegal drugs, and/or paraphernalia at school, school-sponsored activities, or in school vehicles. For this rule, illegal drugs include controlled substances, prescription drugs used or possessed without a prescription, (or used in a manner different than the prescribed dosage) solvents used for intoxication and those substances possessed, sold, and/or used that are held out to be, or represented to be, controlled substances, illegal substances, or counterfeit in any respect illegal or controlled substances.  The Superintendent or their designee has the authority to long-term suspend and/or recommend expulsion of students who have been found guilty of an alcohol/drug related violation of the school rules of state laws.

STUDENT DRESS
It is the aim of the Clovis Public Schools to display to the public at all times a proper standard of morals, conduct, dress, attitude, courtesy and friendliness on the part of all students.  Therefore, in keeping with the above aim, a student’s appearance, mode of dress, and/or cleanliness shall not disrupt the educational process, or constitute a threat to safety.)

To implement the above policy, the following regulations were adopted:

  1. Shorts, skirts, and dresses will not be acceptable when it is determined that they are inappropriate due to fit and/or length. Pants and shorts should fit at the waist and crotch area so as to prevent sagging. If a critical judgment is necessary, shorts, skirts, and dresses will be no shorter than mid thigh for boys and girls. The wearing of double pants or shorts will not be allowed.
    • No nylon or spandex shorts or leotards shall be worn without a garment over them that is determined to be acceptable.
    • Pants and cut-off shorts will be rolled up so the frayed ends do not show and must meet the same standards as skirts and shorts.

Parent Involvement
We request that parents become involved and be a part of our school.  There are many ways to support student learning at Lockwood including:

  • Keeping regular communication with your child’s teacher
  • Attending School functions

  • Volunteering in your child’s classroom/school
  • Becoming part of the School Advisory Council

SCHOOL ADVISORY COUNCIL (SAC)
The SAC is elected by the school members and will advise on matters pertaining to special programs, needs assessment and other pertinent functions of the school. This committee acts as the voice of the schools’ parents. The chairperson and principal will also serve on a District level PAC composed of representatives from all schools in the district. The SAC is composed of 5-7 members.

Accelerated Reading
The books are grouped according to reading level with each level color-coded. Each book is worth so many “points” depending on the amount of reading text and the difficulty of the book. In order to be successful at this program, students need to read books that are on their level. This is an “independent” reading level. Based on the color (level) that they are reading a point goal is set for each individual student.
Students must maintain an average percent correct of 92% (on the printed reports for each book they test over). When they go above the 92% average they will be moved to a more difficult level. Students are given time daily to read their accelerated reading books. They are also encouraged to read when finished with other work.
Students are rewarded in various ways for reaching their goals as set by student and their teacher.

Lockwood Elementary diligently works to screen all Accelerated Reader books for age appropriateness and content prior to placing them in our library collection. Please note that we are not responsible for the content in any Accelerated Reader book that is acquired outside of our school library. Although an Accelerated Reader test may be available for books you select outside of our school, this in no way means that we endorsed this reading selection.
