School employees exercise caution in administering first aid to students. Normally, our school nurse will be available for this purpose, or the student will be taken to medical facilities if the situation warrants.
ADMINISTERING MEDICINES TO STUDENTS
School employees cannot to administer medication without a physician's authorization.
If your child requires medication during the school day, you will need to turn in a medication form, which is included in this handbook or can be obtained from the school secretary.
Written instructions signed by the physician will be required and will include:
- child's name
- name of medication
- purpose of medication
- time of day to be administered
- dosage
- specific procedures for administration
The container with the medication must have a pharmacy label with your child’s name, the name of the drug, the strength and correct dosage, directions for administration and the name of the physician. The school nurse must be notified of all students taking medication at school. Medications MUST be kept in a central location within a locked closet or cabinet unless refrigeration is required.
Non-prescription medications such as aspirin, cold tablets, vitamins, cough drops and cough syrup MAY NOT be administered by school staff. It is violation of New Mexico State Statutes for school personnel to give any drug without a physician's prescription. The school district retains the discretion to reject the administration of medicine. Nursing procedures for students must have physician's orders.
The purpose of this policy is to ensure that students receive necessary medication according to their physician’s orders and to ensure maximum safety for all concerned.
