Mesa Parents,

It is impossible to believe that the 2009-10 school year is drawing to a close. What a great year we've had, and it's not over yet. May is filled with activities, and students scrambling to meet their final goals.

As you know, I am retiring after 36 years in education that includes 19 years at Mesa. I've had a great time watching hundreds of children walk through the Mesa halls and celebrating their accomplishments.

Some of the Mesa Milestones include:

  • Mesa opened its doors in the fall of 1991. Students chose the school colors, mascot, and school song. Parents, students, and staff launched the school with a balloon launch in front of the school. • The first Mesa Renaissance Fair and Maypole was celebrated in April, 1992. • The first Mesa 6th grade class was promoted in May, 1992.
  • Mesa was named first National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence in Clovis in 2001.
  • Mesa implemented the Character Counts! program in 1995.
  • Mesa adopted the philosophy of Multiple Intelligences ("We are smart in many ways.") The Mesa Multiple Intelligences Festival was implemented.
  • Mesa became part of the Clovis Music Festival celebration.
  • Mesa students have donated thousands of dollars in cash, food, and supplies to local, national, and international charities and veterans as part of the school’s emphasis on service.
  • Mesa principal, teachers, and parents have written successful grants and had fundraisers that have resulted in a shade structure, an amphitheater, greenhouse, walking trail, an environmental and energy conservation program, garden, pond, and art works for the school.

It is my pleasure to introduce to you the next Mesa principal, Carrie Bunce. Mrs. Bunce has 20 years of experience with the Clovis Schools. She has been the very successful Barry Elementary principal for 12 years, so she brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to the Mesa principalship. We are very happy to welcome her to Mesa.

Have a great summer, and thanks again for being a part of my life and career.

Jan Cox, Mesa Principal

Kindergarten
We have had a fabulous year in Kindergarten!!!!! This is a bittersweet time, as we see our little darlings turn into first graders! The month of May will be very busy, as we round out the year.

We will be doing final testing, and scheduling your conferences to talk about your child's growth.

We have our end of year programs coming up, Fun in the Sun Day, & Mesa Country Olympics. Have a great summer!

1st Grade
We are excited to see how much these children have grown over the school year. It is wonderful to see our students become more and more independent in all the things they do in school. Please continue reading with your child. A child is never too old to listen to (or read) stories. Remember to read to or with your child during the summer also. This will
help make the transition into 2nd grade much easier.

We are still working on addition and subtraction facts to 20. Practice these at home to reinforce the work we are doing here at school. Reading is still an important part of our lessons even in these last weeks of school. With that in mind, please help your child continue to work on his/her AR goal for the 4th nine weeks.

Tests will be administered the first two weeks in May. We will be comparing your child to his/her scores at the beginning of the year. So remind them to do their best.

Thank you to all those volunteers during the Renaissance Fair. We could not do what we do without parental involvement. We appreciate the opportunity you have given us this year to help shape these brilliant young minds. Have a terrific summer!

2nd Grade
A very big THANK YOU to our special parents for their help in making our King Richard's fair a success! We couldn't do it without you! May is an exciting and busy month for second graders. We are still needing to work on our reading and Accelerated Math goals. Don't give up or quit yet...read at home and at school.

Other activities throughout the month are: Character Counts! Assembly May 7th, Skating, May 17th, Fun in the Sun, May 18th, Awards Day, May 20th, Reading Renaissance Celebration May 21, Mesa Olympics May 24th, and THE LAST DAY OF SCHOOL, MAY 25th. Information will come home soon on each activity.

We want to take this opportunity to tell you what a great year it has been. Thank you for sharing your kids with us! We want to encourage our students to read during the summer months. Have a safe and restful summer, and we will see you in August..

3rd Grade
A special THANK YOU to all of our parents who helped make our Third Grade booths a hit. We certainly could not have done it without you! You are truly wonderful!

We are continuing to work hard in class, so that we can finish the year strong with project-oriented assignments, as well as Accelerated Reading and Accelerated Math goals. Please encourage your child to be responsible for all assignments and goals as summer approaches, and fair weather encourages more outside activities.

Upcoming Dates to Remember:
May 20-Awards Day (10 a.m.)

We have truly enjoyed working with your children this year. Thank you for all of your support and the gift of your child. We hope you have a safe, happy, and restful summer!

4th Grade
Parents, we would like to thank each and every one of you for the great year we had with your children this year. We know that we could not have done it without all your support. Hopefully everyone will have a great summer and get rested up for next year! There are many activities going on this last month, so mark your calendar.

May 7 Character Counts Assembly
May 10 Fourth Grade Field Trip to Billy the Kid Museum and Bosque Memorial to see the exhibit "Free at Last"
May19 Spelling Bee
May 20 Awards Day (4th grade at 10:45)
May 21 Reading Renaissance Celebration
May 24 Mesa Country Olympics
May 25 LAST DAY of SCHOOL!!!!!

5th Grade
It’s time to celebrate! Testing is finally over, and the scores will be reported at the beginning of next year. The students all worked very hard, and we are anxious to see how they did. The Renaissance Fair was great. Congratulations to all of the students who were chosen for prince, princess, banner carrier, town crier, and maypole participants. It was
great to see everyone get involved. We appreciate all of our wonderful parents, who volunteered their valuable time to support our fund-raising efforts. Without your help and support, we could not accomplish everything we do with your children. We are now looking forward to a busy end of the year. We have many things planned, including our field
trip. We also have our annual cookout, Aladdin Jr. musical, awards day, Mesa Country Olympics, and our Final Character Counts assembly. We hope we covered everything. Information on each of these events will be sent out as they draw nearer. With so much happening at the end of the year, it is essential that your children be focused during the days and weeks to come. Please encourage them to do their best and finish the year strong.

Thanks,
Your Fabulous Fifth Grade Teachers

6th Grade
As you know, students have registered for middle school, and we have had a lot of excitement over this! They are ready to transition to secondary school. Our best wishes go with them for a bright and exciting future.

Thank you for all of your support at the Renaissance Fair. We used the flowers, ribbon, and elastic for the jingles and headbands. You probably saw your flowers on some darling's head or heard the jingles on a little wrist. These items have become a tradition at the Fair, and we appreciate your sending such wonderful ribbon and flowers. The drinks
and candy bars were prizes for the Putt-Putt. Those of you who worked, a huge thanks goes to you from us. Our parent support this year has been tremendous.

May passes the quickest of all the school months. We are striving for all the sixth graders to meet their AR goals. Many of them have already achieved their goals and are just enjoying reading. If your child hasn't met the goal, please encourage them to read at home.

Sixth grade promotion will be the last day of school at 9:30 AM. You wil be receiving a letter detailing the required dress for this occasion. After the ceremony, you may take your new 7th grader home!

This year has flown by, and we have enjoyed teaching your child. We are very proud of the students that we are sending to Marshall and Yucca. We will miss them next year, and good luck to each one.

Parent Advisory Council
Wow! Time sure flies by when we’re having fun. A huge THANK YOU to all the parents, teachers, CAFB volunteers, and to the students of the Yucca Honor Society that made the Renaissance Fair awesome this year. PAC also had a great turn out of volunteers to decorate Mesa for the fair. We did it in record time!!!!!!

Mesa is in the midst of change for next year. First, we will be changing principals. We will dearly miss Mrs. Cox, but I know that we will be in good hands with Mrs. Bunce. Next, Mrs. Eldridge is leaving and I do not know what I am going to do without her, she really is an honoree PAC member. I will miss you both very much, and below is a little poem that says it all.

Now That You’re Retiring

Now that you’re retiring
We can tell you how we feel;
Our heartfelt admiration
Is deeply felt and real.
You’ve been a great role model
For teachers and each kid;
You showed us how to be
In everything you did.
We’ll miss your fine example;
We’ll miss the things you gave;
Our pleasant memories of you
We’ll recall and carefully save.
We wish for your retirement
The best of all your days;
May you discover sweet fulfillment
In new and rewarding ways.

By Joanna Fuchs

Last but not least. Next year I will be co-chairing the PAC with Ranee Drahman, who is a wonderful PAC mom. I want to give thanks to Mesa's AWESOME PAC: Wendie Berry, Lorri Howe, Britni Sherwood, Nicki Hahn, T'mara Parker, Charles Jenkins, Sara Underwood, Ranee Drahman, and Kim Cabanas. "Volunteers don't get paid, not because they're worthless, but because they're priceless. ~Sherry Anderson.

Have a wonderful and safe summer!
Windy Martin, PAC

Nurse
MHello Mesa Parents & Students. Just a reminder that if you have a student who will be a 6th grader next year, he or she will need to have an up to date Tetanus booster (Required for 7th grade entry.) Your student will not be given a schedule at the Middle School without proof of this vaccination being completed. We will be offering the Tetanus (Tdap) booster through the schools (Usually after the Christmas break). We also can administer the (Meningitis) vaccine through the schools, which is
recommended but not required.

If you have a student who will be in KG next year, please make sure that their 4-Year-Old-Boosters are up to date and that they have 2 Varicella (Chicken Pox) shots done, unless they have had the disease. A completed copy is needed in the office before they can begin class.

With our weather eventually becoming New Mexico Hot, please make sure that your kids are drinking plenty of water and using their sunscreen. Once again, thanks for helping me keep our kids safe and healthy.

Have a Great Summer!
Nurse David

P.E.
P.E. has been a BLAST this year. But we are not finished yet. We are getting things together for this year’s Mesa Olympics. For those volunteers that have already signed up to help, THANKS! For those that would still like to volunteer please let me know ASAP. The kids really look forward to this day. We have lots of fun and its a good way to end the year.

Thanks!
Mrs. Bonney-P.E.
