Kindergarten
Mrs. Davis, Mrs. Ericson, Mrs. St. John, and Mrs. Thomas
March will be a fun month for kindergarteners. We will be making Leprechaun traps to catch that pesky Leprechaun!!!!
Please continue helping your child at home with sight words and practicing spelling words. Please allow them to read the decodable books to you as they come home. We appreciate all the work you do nightly with your child!
1st Grade
Mrs. Adkins, Mrs. Bonner, Mrs. Laing, and Mrs. White
The school year is flying, and our first graders are making awesome progress. When a child learns to read, the whole world opens up amazing opportunities for them. We are very proud of the hard work our first graders are doing to learn to read. The end of the nine weeks is approaching. Please make sure your child is reading and testing for their AR goal.
In math, we will be working on word problems, volume, temperature, weight, and number lines. Also we will be adding 2 digit numbers with a 1 digit number. We will continue to work on our math facts of addition and subtraction.
We ask that you continue to help your children with their reading and meeting their AR goals. We thank you for your support.
Have a great spring break!
2nd Grade
Mrs. Ingram, Mrs. Nuttall, Mrs. Owen, and Mrs. Simms
We feel the luck of the Irish, because we are learning so many things in second grade. Happy St. Patrick's Day!
All the little leprechauns, also known as our students, have been studying about fractions and measurement in math. Please continue to use your parent magic, also known as "help", in practicing math facts. We will continue adding and subtracting 2-digit numbers and knowing the facts will make it easier!
Please continue working with your child on his/her AR goals. Listening and sharing their AR books will be so beneficial.
We also want to thank our parents who helped this past February with our Kiss-a-grams. We had hundreds of bouquets, and we couldn't have done it without your help and support.
Spring will soon be here, so don't forget to send a lovely spring bouquet of balloons from the Second Grade All Occasion Delivery!
3rd Grade
Mrs. Marshall, Mrs. Wagner, and Mrs. Zapalac
May the Luck o' the Irish be with you this lovely March! Third through sixth graders will begin taking the New Mexico Standards-Based Assessment tests starting on March 29th. This is very important for many reasons. It is one tool that teachers use to evaluate students in a testing situation. Teachers after third grade use the scores as a guide to know students' strengths and weaknesses so they can best prepare to teach students. One way the district uses the information is to find new and improved programs. The state uses the information to revise or set new standards. Testing also helps parents know areas to lend extra support with their children at home. As you can see, this test is very important! Therefore, please help your child stay healthy! We need them here every day during test prep. It is critical that students be present each day of testing, with a good night's sleep and a tummy full of a nutritious breakfast. We will be sending home notes with more testing information as the date draws near! Our goal for each student is that they come prepared to do their best. We depend on our exemplary parents to help support us by helping "our" children rest, having a hearty nutritious breakfast, and a positive, up-lifting send-off each day, so they can focus during testing times. We appreciate your help, as always!
We would also like to say a special "THANK YOU!" to those faithful parents that have been helping each week to make popcorn! We really rely on the funds we earn to help pay for the buses for our field trips, our butterfly larvae, and classroom supplies for our Mother's Day and Father's Day projects. Rest up over Spring Break, because April and May will be packed with lots of activities!!!
4th Grade
Mrs. Cook, Mrs. Hardisty, Mrs. Klein, and Mrs. Sweet
The end of the third nine weeks is rapidly approaching, so it is time for a last minute push for students to make their AR/AM Goals. Remember these goals will be reflected on their report cards.
Please take a little extra time to check over your child's daily assignments. Many are beginning to "rush" through assignments, making minor mistakes. Also ask your children if they need to refurbish their school supplies. Many are without red leads, pencils, lead for mechanical pencils, etc.
We have begun preparing for our New Mexico Standards Based Assessment Test which will begin March 29. It is very important that your children are here daily for test preparation, so they will be equipped with the knowledge necessary for success.
Some important dates to remember:
March 5 - Character Counts Assembly
March 10 - last day to meet goals
March 12 - Report Cards
March 15 - starts Spring Break
5th Grade
Mrs. Ardis, Mr. Kendall, and Mr. Schwartz
As you all know, we are knee-deep in test prep. We feel that all students have been trying their best and continue to show us how ready they are. We will continue to prepare them to “show what they know” on April 6th.
We will wrap up the 3rd nine weeks on March 10th. Please continue to encourage your children to make AR and AM goals on a weekly basis. If weekly goals are met, students will certainly be successful at the end of the nine weeks. WE SMELL WAFFLES!
We hope you enjoy your spring break (March 15 - 19). We are looking forward to spending time with our families, and wish you safe travels and lots of rest. As always, thanks for all you do!
6th Grade
Mrs. Alexander, Mrs. Corbin, and Mrs. Smith
March is an exciting month in 6th grade! We are ready for the spring, and even a warm New Mexican wind would be welcome! Our folks have been working hard through the long cold winter. Spring Break will be a welcome respite from the cold.
In Imagine It! we have studied natural disasters. Hearts for Haiti accentuated the catastrophic effect of an earthquake. Students have learned exciting facts about tornadoes, volcanic eruptions, tsunamis, river floods, and earthquakes. Part of their research included how to anticipate these disasters. We have been impressed with their research skills and proficiency in using the internet.
Our next Imagine It! unit takes us back in time. We will go beneath the streets of Boston into a tunnel, through the locks of the Panama Canal, into the air with the Wright brothers, into a new life with immigrants, and to the 1904 World's Fair in St. Louis. American history will come alive in the selections they will read, and in the projects they will complete. We are excited about our up-coming journeys!
We are reviewing for the state testing in math and continuing with Excel lessons. Accelerated Math goals are still a priority for our students. They will be well-prepared for middle school math classes.
March is a herald of spring to come. Harry Behn perhaps said it best:
“Sleeping beneath the deep snow
Seeds of honeyed flowers know
When it is time to wake and grow."
