Literacy is a focus area at Ranchvale, and we are continually revisiting our literacy frameworks to meet the needs of our students. Several support programs have been put in place in the regular education classrooms to enhance the required curriculum. Reading Renaissance and/or Accelerated Reading was introduced in 1996 and is used in many classrooms to track the amount of reading students do. The Literacy Collaborative’s Framework for Early Literacy Lessons has been implemented in all K-2 classrooms. The new 3-6 grade literacy model has been implemented in some of the intermediate grades, with an integrated Reader's Workshop/Writer's Workshop with other core content areas. All students engage in Writer's Workshop at least 4 times a week.

Number Literacy is a wonderful hands-on, visual support for children learning numeracy skills. Children in all classrooms engage in rich discussion and writing activities about numbers and how they are used in our everyday lives. Additional focus areas include geometry, time, and money. Many teacher utilize Teamwork as part of their homework assignments. Teamwork is a family activity that provides an opportunity for all family members to engage in math activities. Students then bring the completed solution to class and share how their team arrived at their solution. Students are then able to see that there are many methods for solving problems.
