Virtual Field Trips

What is a virtual field trip?

A virtual field trip is an electronic version of the traditional field trip. Instead of taking your students to a physical location, you can take your students there via distance learning technology. There are a number of different formats used for VFTs. Some trips simply consist of a list of links on one web page, while other trips use some type of buttons to move through the tour. Real-time Virtual field trips involve the use of videoconferencing and audioconferencing technologies to permit students in one location to virtually visit and learn about people or places in another location.

There is a list of links to Virtual Field Trips on the CMS website. Go to the list. Additional, VFT ideas can be found by performing a search through a search engine.

Where do I begin?

  1. Search for resources that match your curricular needs
  2. Receive permission from your principal
  3. Check with Technology to make sure the required VFT format is supported by the district
  4. Submit the required field trip paperwork following district/school procedures
  5. Book the field trip with the institution that is going to deliver the field trip
  6. Ask your School Secretary to complete and submit a Purchase Order
  7. Contact the Technology Department to set up the equipment the day of your VFT
