Family Leadership Institute (FLI) is a multi-faceted educational program, which focuses on providing families with knowledge, tools, and inspiration to help their children succeed in school and life.

The primary objective of the FLI is to teach parents the art and skills of family leadership in support of academic achievement and life success of both the family and the children as well. The FLI in Clovis is held three times each month.

Through a series of 10 modules focusing on leadership in the home, school, and community, parents are provided the information necessary to enhance their effectiveness as role models for their children. Each FLI workshop contains a series of lectures, participant discussions, story telling, role-playing, and group and individual activities. Based on survey results, participants find the training useful and valuable.

An FLI Graduation/Celebration Ceremony is held at the end of the training.

The Family Literacy Program (FLP)

The Family Literacy Program (FLP) takes place within 2 schools in the Clovis Municipal Schools – Lincoln Jackson Family Center located at 206 Alphon and Los Niños Early Intervention Center located at 3301 North Thornton. The program is designed to provide developmentally appropriate experiences for four year olds and their families. Family literacy is based on a timeless idea that brings parents and children together to learn. It is unique among other kinds of pre-school programs because it looks at literacy issues across 2 generations. By working with parents and children as a family, rather that focusing on them as individuals, a Family Literacy Program can better reinforce the internal motivation both parents and children must have to succeed together. Ultimately, parents learn that they are their child’s first teacher.

Is My Child Eligible?

If you have a child who is four years of age by August 31st, then your child may be eligible for the Family Literacy Program.  There are limited openings at both of the preschools so it is best to apply early.  Applications are available at the preschools.  Families living north of 14th Street are zoned for Los Niños and families living south of 14th Street or at Cannon AFB housing are zoned for Lincoln Jackson.

What Does Family Literacy Provide?

The program is designed to provide developmentally appropriate experiences for four year olds and their families.

  • Early Childhood Education: Provides increased developmental skills of young children to better prepare them for academic success in school, through an opportunity to participate in preschool classes four days a week.

  • Adult Literacy: Provides the opportunity for parents to raise their educational level, helping them gain the motivational skills, and knowledge needed to become employed, or to pursue future education and training.

  • Parent Education and Support Groups: Provides parents with an opportunity to share their concerns with a certified teacher and/or peers, and learn new parenting strategies. It also provides support to parents in their effort to deal more effectively with day-to-day challenges of raising children, through workshops, and teacher conferencing.

  • Parent and Child Interactions: Provides role models and structured situations for positive parent-child interaction, empowering parents in their roles as the primary teacher of their own children. It also strengthens the learning relationship between parent and child and helps parents feel more comfortable in the school setting.
