Gattis seventh and eight grade students recently took part in the school spelling bee. Coordinator Christine Calhoun said 29 students took part in the competition.
"The kids were all smiles and worked hard," she said
Calhoun said she had students introduce themselves to the eight volunteer judges and shake their hands.
"We tried to tie in some of the soft skills students learned during the Amazing Shake competition," Calhoun said.
The Bee went seven rounds before a winner was named. Eight grader Zhaniyah Holback won the English Spelling Bee, Porfirio Martinez came in second and Karter Davis was awarded third place
Winners were given books and a cup filled with candy bars.
Four students took part in the Spanish Spelling Bee. This contest went nine rounds before a winner was determined. Calhoun said all students were given prizes for participation. The winners of the Spanish Spelling Bee were: First place -- Fatima Ruiz Tenorio; second place -- Avril Maldonado; third place -- Anny Melgar and fourth place -- Leyani Qurioz Zayas.
