Students listen as another student teaches the class

Seventh grade English and English as a Second Language teacher, Mrs. Guiterrez recently put students in groups to work on an assignment and said her student, Javan, rocked this thing!

She explained that he stepped up and led a group of boys (Richard Harding, Samuel Wilson, Christopher Weeden, Gabriel Garza, Roylan Deer, and Kaleb Barfield) through a 20 question end-of-selection test. He stood up. He taught. He asked the boys to explain their thoughts. He asked them to explain why answers were wrong. He led them in rousing rounds of applause when they found an answer. They asked questions. They had discussions. When he decided he needed to show them a piece of text, he took over her overhead projector and walked them through the text.

Mrs. Guiterrez said it was amazing to watch the teaching and learning unfold.

"I have never been so proud of a group of seventh period boys," she said. "I awarded him (Javan) house points. Today was on a whole new level; just, wow!"
