KINDERGARTEN – 12TH GRADE: ENTER THE CLOVIS DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. COMMISSION ART, ESSAY, AND SPEECH CONTEST!

ALL Projects MUST BE based on the theme:

“It Starts with Me: Shifting the Cultural Climate through the Study and Practice of Kingian Non- Violence”

Six steps for achieving nonviolent social change: Information Gathering---Education---Personal Commitment---Negotiation---Direct Action---Reconciliation

AND include

First and Last Name, School, Grade/Teacher, and Parent/Guardian phone number

All projects must be submitted to iAcademy at Lincoln Jackson by 4:00 pm on Dec. 8


Principles of Non- Violence:

Principle ONE: Non-violence is a way of life for courageous people

Principle TWO: Non-violence seeks to win friendship and understanding

Principle THREE: Non-violence seeks to defeat injustice, not people.

Principle FOUR: Non-violence holds that suffering can educate and transform

Principle FIVE: Non-violence chooses love instead of hate.

Principle SIX: Non-violence believes that the universe is on the side of justice

 

Art projects can be completed in any medium. It would be great to include a short description/interpretation of your art project. Be creative!!!

 

Essay

All entries must be original, legible, and double spaced. Essay should focus on the theme.

Elementary: 1 page Middle/High School: 2-3 pages

The Commission request that each school, teacher, and parent should provide an opportunity to allow students to explore content around Dr. King and create projects. Schools should identify the top projects in each category Art, Essay and Speech to represent their school. All projects must be submitted to iAcademy at Lincoln Jackson by 4:00 pm on Dec. 8, 2023. 

First place winners win a cash prize. Second and Third place winners win a Medallion.

All prizes will be given at the Annual Scholarship Breakfast held on Saturday, Jan 13, 2024.

 

ART

Art projects can be completed in any medium. It would be great to include a short description/interpretation of your art project. Be creative!!!

Essay

Elementary: 1 page, Middle/High School: 2-3 pages

Speech:

Please provide a copy of the speech to show your intent by contest deadline (Dec 8). Students must perform their speech at the District Competition, on Monday, December 11 at 6:30 p.m. at iAcademy at Lincoln Jackson. The speech should be no longer than 3 minutes. It must be an original work and focus on the theme.

The first-place speech winners in each grade category will perform the speech at the Annual Scholarship Breakfast on Saturday, January 13, 2024.

 The Commission will select winners of the district competition from the entries submitted by the deadline. All winners will be notified by the Commission directly.

 Please ensure your phone number is on all project submissions. Projects may be featured in conjunction with the Annual Scholarship Breakfast and other Clovis MLK Commission related events.
