Clovis Municipal Schools would like to recognize and applaud the recent engagement and civic participation of our community and CMS staff members regarding academic calendar mandates proposed by the New Mexico Public Education Department (NMPED).
It is with pride and gratitude that the district observed community members from all perspectives joining with others around the state, exercising their right to be heard. Hundreds of pages of feedback – many from our own community and staff – were submitted to the NMPED during the public comment period.
While we are of the continued opinion that school calendars should remain under the authority of local districts who strive to serve the unique needs of their communities, we applaud the participation of our friends, neighbors and community members in exercising citizenship – regardless of which side of the issue they are on.
A decision regarding changes to public school calendar requirements was expected Tuesday, however there has been speculation that the NMPED plans to instead delay finalizing any amendments to the rule. We are continuing to monitor the progress of this issue and will provide updates as appropriate.
Meanwhile, the 2024 legislative session is officially underway with a number of education-related bills having been filed for consideration. Community members can track the progress of legislative items introduced during this year’s 30-day session at: www.nmlegis.gov
As we work diligently to educate the leaders of tomorrow and impress upon them their civic responsibilities and rights, it is with pride that we point to our own Clovis community as an example to be followed – WAY TO MAKE IT COUNT CLOVIS!
