Zia Elementary School recently held a special assembly to celebrate its 2024 National Blue Ribbon School award, honoring the school’s outstanding academic success. Mr. Jay Brady emceed the event, with high energy throughout the celebration as both students and staff participated.
Superintendent Mrs. Renee Russ congratulated everyone on their efforts and shared a personal story about her childhood friendship with Dr. Davis, the school’s principal. The anecdote added a heartfelt touch to the ceremony. State Representative Andrea Reeb expressed pride in all the hard work and dedication shown and invited school representative to the Round House in Santa Fe to be formally recognized at the state legislature.
Curry County Commission Chairman Robert Thornton issued a formal proclamation, declaring October 10th as “Blue Day” in honor of Zia’s achievement. Zia Elementary is one of only three schools in New Mexico to earn this national distinction from U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona this year.
Students showed off their school spirit by cheering for their respective houses between speakers. Mayor Mike Morris also spoke to students, stressing the importance of striving for excellence. As an extra treat, a Blue Bell Ice Cream representative donated a book to the school library and provided ice cream for the students.
The National Blue Ribbon recognition highlights schools that demonstrate either exemplary academic performance or progress in closing achievement gaps. Zia Elementary joins other esteemed local schools that have earned this honor, such as Mesa Elementary and Texico Middle School.
The assembly served as a proud reminder of the hard work and dedication of Zia Elementary’s students, teachers, and staff in fostering an environment of academic excellence.
