4th grade is currently working on the PLTW Module Organisms: Structure & Function. They did a simulation experiment to learn about how cellular respiration occurs and how different variables impact water and nutrient absorption through plant root systems.

Through this process, they learned that water is absorbed faster when it rains after a dry period (drought), but will slow absorption when access to water is available or occurs over a longer period of time (prolonged rain/ wet season). They observed that plants with deeper root systems absorbed water differently than those with shallow roots. They measured after 1 minute exposure to water (drought), documenting the length of water absorbed by their paper towel, and again when it was it was put back in the water and left for 30 more minutes (prolonged rain/wet season) identifying that less water was absorbed between 1 minute and 30 minutes than the 1 minute exposure.

They worked together to test their predictions, compare and contrast the data collected, use critical thinking to find variables, and document their findings!

Good job, GOOD JOB! 👏🏼 👏🏼

First grade buzzed over to a special location to learn about REAL busy bees and how they help us and the earth. They got to see a beekeeper's uniform and some tools they use to harvest honey. Special guest, Bumble the Bee, taught them how to stay calm around bees and what can happen if they don’t. They learned a lot of interesting facts about bees from the presenters who were as sweet as honey!

During our English Language Learners (E.L.L.) STEM activity, the 3rd–5th grade students worked alongside the K–2nd graders to build a bridge that was 1 foot long and 10 inches tall. The older students used their language skills aligned to WIDA standards to guide and support the younger students. They used clear, descriptive language to explain each step, ask questions, and give directions, demonstrating skills from the speaking and listening domains. They also modeled academic vocabulary such as “measure,” “balance,” and “support,” "pillars" helping younger students understand key concepts. Through collaboration, the younger students practiced listening and responding, while the older students strengthened their ability to explain ideas and adapt their language for different audiences, showing growth in both social and academic language development. Way to go E.L.L. kids!! GOOD JOB GOOD JOB!!!!!
