We Want Your Feedback: Revised Draft Calendars for the 2025–2026 School Year

Clovis Municipal Schools is in the process of finalizing the academic calendar for the 2025–2026 school year. As part of that process, we are inviting families, staff, and community members to review and provide input on three newly developed draft instructional calendars.

Survey Feedback Summary

We recently conducted a survey to gather input on calendar preferences. We appreciate the thoughtful responses from our community. Several key themes emerged:

  • Start and End Dates: Respondents showed a strong preference for school to begin on a Monday, rather than midweek. Many also supported a later start in August, with an emphasis on avoiding any start dates in July.

  • Thanksgiving Break: Opinions were divided. Some favored a full week off, while others suggested a shorter break to support student attendance and help working families.

  • Other Holidays and Breaks:

    • Super Snow Monday was widely seen as unnecessary, with suggestions to repurpose it elsewhere in the calendar.

    • Feedback on the May 1st holiday was mixed, with suggestions to remove or move it.

    • Some respondents felt the spring holiday following spring break was redundant.

  • Operational and Staffing Considerations: Staff shared concerns about how the calendar affects work schedules, especially challenges with ending the school year when staff and students finish on the same day.

  • Student and Academic Impact: Many noted that midweek starts and short holiday weeks can negatively affect attendance and consistency.

We are grateful for this feedback and will use it to help guide our decisions.

What’s in the Draft Calendars?

Each draft includes the following:

  • 173 instructional days for students

  • 1 Parent/Teacher Conference Day

  • 183 contract days for teachers

  • A delayed start for Kindergarten and Pre-K in all three drafts

  • A full two-week Winter Break across all versions

Here are some differences between the drafts:

  • Draft C includes a shortened Thanksgiving Break

  • Drafts D and E provide a full week off for Thanksgiving

  • Draft D removes Super Snow Monday and the Spring Holiday Monday, reallocating those days to Thanksgiving

  • Draft E removes Super Snow Monday and Veterans Day, reallocating those days to Thanksgiving

To meet state requirements, each calendar ensures a minimum of 1,140 instructional hours annually. Each school day must be at least 5.5 hours long, excluding lunch and recess.
