CLOVIS, N.M–On Saturday, May 17, students, families, and community members took part in the second of our outdoor learning activities, funded by a grant from the New Mexico Outdoor Education Fund. This outdoor event was held at Greene Acres Park and provided a day of fun and hands-on-learning for the 41 students who participated.
Students rotated through four educational stations throughout the day. The event kicked off with a fishing derby, during which participants caught a total of eight fish. Prizes were awarded to students placing first through third based on both fish size and total catch.
Following a picnic-style lunch provided by Rib Crib, families and students explored three additional stations:
Cannon AFB Survival Skills - Led by Cannon’s SEER Team, students and parents learned how to make fishing devices using just a soda can and string.
Wildlife Photography - Cannon Air Force Base’s Media Team instructed students in photographing local wildlife and plant life using digital cameras.
CHS Welding and Career Exploration–Students received a presentation from Cannon AFB on Career and Technical Education (CTE), outdoor, and military career pathways, and also learned about the rocket stoves created by Clovis High School (CHS) welding students.
At the end of the event, each student received a fishing pole to keep, encouraging them to continue exploring the outdoors with their families.
