Yucca Middle School and Clovis Fire Department
Yucca Middle School 8th grade Science classes welcomed guest speakers from Clovis Fire Department, Jason Hamner and Zack Wheeler. The goal was to discuss chemical and physical reactions and changes that occur in a real-world environment, such as the fire department and talk about evidence of a chemical change and how that pertains to the characteristics of fire.
Mr. Hamner and Mr. Wheeler discussed how chemicals react in a house fire and the dangers of leaving chemicals out. They also discussed BLEVE (Boiling Liquid Vapor Explosion) and that by cooling the vapor back into a liquid (physical change), fire fighters can control a BLEVE.
Mr. Hamner and Mr. Wheeler also did some demonstrations including different colors of flames, demo of backdraft, as well as a demo of a small BLEVE. Fire Safety was high on the list throughout the discussion.

Jason Hamner has been with the Clovis Fire Department for 5 years as a driver operator and Public Education Coordinator.
Zack Wheeler has been with Clovis Fire Department for 1 year as a fire fighter.
Escuela Secundaria Yucca y Departamento de Bomberos de Clovis
Las clases de Ciencia de 8th grado de la Escuela Secundaria Yucca recibieron a los oradores invitados del Departamento de Bomberos de Clovis, Jason Hamner y Zack Wheeler. El objetivo fue hablar sobre las reacciones y los cambios quĆmicos y fĆsicos que ocurren en un entorno del mundo real, como en el departamento de bomberos, y analizar la evidencia de un cambio quĆmico y cĆ³mo esto se relaciona con las caracterĆsticas del fuego.
El Sr. Hamner y el Sr. Wheeler hablaron sobre cĆ³mo reaccionan los productos quĆmicos en un incendio domĆ©stico y los peligros de dejar productos quĆmicos expuestos. TambiĆ©n explicaron el fenĆ³meno conocido como BLEVE (ExplosiĆ³n de Vapores de LĆquidos en EbulliciĆ³n) y cĆ³mo, al enfriar el vapor para que vuelva a su estado lĆquido (cambio fĆsico), los bomberos pueden controlar una BLEVE.
El Sr. Hamner y el Sr. Wheeler tambiĆ©n realizaron varias demostraciones, incluyendo diferentes colores de llamas, una demostraciĆ³n de retroceso de llama (backdraft), asĆ como una demostraciĆ³n de una pequeƱa BLEVE.
