Vision Specialist

Visually Impaired services may be provided to a student who qualifies with an identified visual impairment and whose progress in the general education curriculum is impacted by their visual impairment.

CMS employs an itinerant Teacher of Students with Visual Impairments (TSVI). An itinerant teacher is a highly qualified professional who travels to each of the campuses within the district to provide instruction and consultation.

The TSVI is responsible for teaching students the skills necessary to access the core curriculum as well as to teach students concepts and experiences that most sighted students learn incidentally by observing others.

The TSVI also reviews doctor's eye exam reports, provides functional vision assessments, teacher and parent consultations and recommendations for accommodations, educational materials, and direct services including Braille instruction for students who are blind or visually impaired. The specialist also coordinates the acquisition of materials from the New Mexico School for the Blind.

The Vision Impairment Specialist is located at the Student Support Building, and can be contacted by calling 575-769-4490.
